Tom's Impressions of the new SGI sw1600 digital flat panel.

Using these displays to view anthing with text, web pages is a joy. They are sharp and bright. I reduced the font size in netscape and found I didn't need my reading glasses. A++ is the mark I'd give.
I also looked at several dozen pictures. They do have a little graininess. I don't see this display used for graphic artists. Cad is different. Synthetic rendering I don't think would show the grain.

There are no dead pixels.

The power comes from a cigarette size pack power supply. 12 volt and 3.33Amps out. 40 watts max. I think it runs on 30 watts.

Viewing the screen with a uniform dim color. If your eyes are positioned so that lookin straight ahead you look at 25% down from the top of the display, as you look at the bottom, their is a 1 inch band at the bottom that blossoms somewhat brighter. If you rotate screen so you are looking from just below the center line of the display, the blossum disappears. Gravity is affecting the orientation of the liquid crystals. SGI engineer confirmed that this is known problem with the mitubisi glass. I'm not concerned for me. But some people won't accept this. Could cause expenses in exchanges. Most people won't even notice the problem.

With a bright uniform color or any kind of a pattern or application screen this blossum is not detectable at all.

I have a loopcolor script the does an xsetroot color every second and goes thru lots of colors.

But after seeing the crispness of text on the SGI display, all other analog display's look fuzzy. I use .26 dot pitch 1600x1200
21" monitors. But photos look better.

I'm hoping to install XIG's openGL hardware aware AcceleratedX Library and run some openGL apps. I can both gage the speed of the nine revoulution IV (my observation thus far are it's astonding.) and my perception of linearity of the graphics.
