I have worked in the telecommunications field in Canada for the past 8 years. I do not see any major regulatory issues if Bell Mobility wants to purchase Clearnet. There is no issue with respect to foreign ownership (Canadian company purchasing majority owned canadian company). The same thing can be said for Sprint.
I am not referring to Sprint (U.S.A), but I am referring to Call-Net Enterprises. They are the owners of Sprint Canada and the recent purchasers of Fonorola in Canada. The main reason they purchased Fonorola was for its national network. Now we all know, that Call-Net Enterprises (Sprint Canada) does not own a cellular entity. Thus it makes perfect sense for them to buy Clearnet. I still think and have heard that the front runner is still Bell Mobility. But do not exclude BC Tel/Telus either. They would love to own a major player in Canada's wireless playground and they also have some substantial cash on hand.
Do not expect to see an American company buy a Canadian telecommunications company for at least the next 2-3 years. The Canadian foreign content rule is still in place and I do not envision it being greatly modified or for that matter lifted in the foreseeable future. The purchaser of Clearnet will be a Canadian company!
