I figured I'd reply to myself...it seems fitting since my other d*** computer has me talking to myself.
It's an HP with a K6 330 processor, 64 megs of SDRAM and a 100 bus board and running? Win98 OS. I was running a program that has a live data/news feed - the news got scrambled. In the past, the only way to correct it was to exit the program - so I did. The next thing the screen was indicating I was in DOS...said "critical error has occurred" then "run scandisk" and "then run check fix." Only problem was that I couldn't seem to activate the keyboard...no escape, no typing, no Control/Alt/Delete...nada, zip, nothing. So I said to hell with it, and pressed the Off button on the computer...nothing. The only way I could shut "Hal" down was by turning it off at the power surge unit. After turning on the PC, scandisk automatically started running...that was about 45 minutes ago...it's still going. Not only is it making like the batty battery bunny, its gotten as far as 93% completed - except it changed its mind and went back to 86%, then 88%, then 92%, then 88%, etc. I'm beginning to think there may be something wrong with it.<G> No-<NG> No-<N*G>
I got tired of hearing the thing play with itself, and hit exit...voila, it registered it was 125% completed with its scanning. So I exited Windows for real, by using the keyboard and everything. Now I'm running scandisk from DOS...again, and it actually seems to be working - different menu, actually the last time there wasn't a menu. Well, I got to 92% completed, but things seem to be slowing down; it's checking for crosslinked files...again...looks like I'm going to lose some data. Well, not having the files can't add to my ignorance, just maintain it...nothing new there.
It's strange, I bought a PC so I could work smarter, but all it seems to do is make me feel dumber.<still NG>
