David,
I'm no expert on either Bid.com or eBay, but if you want my opinion FWIW:
- strategic alliances and partnerships (Yahoo!, AOL, AIME, Rogers, and now 24/7), and being in the business world, I believe is the single most important tactic;
- Bid.Com has a much more visually pleasing site, although I concede not as many products (remember eBay was launched in September 1995 - 15 months or 5 Internet years ahead of Bid.Com in June 1997);
- aggressive business plans;
- diverse revenue streams (such as business-to-business, advertising, and of course, online auction, Bid Buddy technology in a wide variety of applications, and more to be announced, I'm sure);
- Dutch Auction (exciting, I'd love to try it once I make some money on Bid.Com LOL);
- shorter auction periods;
- one of only a handful Canadian auction sites;
- Europe, here we come!; and
- BII is still young (lots of room to go up) and cheap like borscht compared to its U.S. counterparts.
If you haven't already, check out Paul's interview on the Wall Street reporter at wallstreetreporter.com (go to the Interviews tab, A-Z alpha link).
Hope this was helpful.
