Qwest Commun Gets $13M IP Backbone Pact From
America Online

DENVER -- Qwest Communications International Inc. (QWST) received a $13 million, multiyear
contract to be a national Internet Protocol backbone provider for America Online Inc. (AOL).

In a press release Wednesday, Qwest said it will provide America Online with high-speed Internet
Protocol connectivity, private line and collocation services, supplying additional bandwidth to the
online service.

The company said America Online will deploy multiple high-speed connections from Qwest,
ranging from Optical Carrier 3 to Optical Carrier 48, in cities throughout the U.S.

Qwest said the agreement also allows America Online to collocate equipment in Qwest facilities,
including some of its ten CyberCenters.

The multimedia communication company reported a loss of $883.1 million, or $3.93 a diluted
share, on revenue of $570.8 million for the six months ended June 30, 1998. Results includes
merger-related charges of $880.5 million.
