Amazon.com's
strong balance sheet allows the company to pursue this aggressive strategy due to its total
cash and marketable securities balance of $373 million.

It is time to send this man bac to school for accounting. A balance shee is stagnant at any point in time but one can determine the financial condition from this statement. It is accurate that cash and scurities were $373 million as of December 31, 1998. However, he left off the fact that accounts payable, not long term debt, was $175 million shich would have had to be disbursed as of now. Let' look at this number today. Cash and securities $200 million. He must have forgotten that.
