That's the key point, isn't it? I think it was much easier for investors to wait a couple of years to double their money when the most they could do was check their daily paper in the morning to see what their stocks did the previous day.

With the internet and CNBC, investors can watch tick by tick, or even worse they can scan some of the SI threads where everyone is claiming to be making 50% returns each day. It's not surprising everyone's looking for instant gratification.

As for "hell freezing over," I think that typically happens the winter after a La Nina.
