New chip mentioned in PCWorld 1/31/97:

Go INTEL !!

Intel's Next Baby: The
Pentium MMX-233
by Randy Ross, PC World

(January 31, 1997) -- Later this year, PC buyers will have a new
high-performance processor option, a 233-MHz Pentium MMX chip. It
will likely appear in desktop systems by late summer and in notebook PCs
by year's end, said a PC World source.

Intel would not comment on unannounced products. However,
spokesperson Manny Vara said that the Pentium chip architecture
supports speeds beyond 200 MHz.

A desktop or notebook system powered by a 233-MHz MMX chip will
perform about 8 to 10 percent faster than a system with a 200-MHz
MMX chip, which is currently the fastest Pentium chip for desktop PCs,
the source said. This performance increase would appear in both standard
PC applications and those optimized to run on MMX chips.

Previously, industry analysts thought the Pentium architecture would top
out at 200 MHz. Intel was expected to reserve higher clock speeds for
Pentium Pro chips. But plans have apparently changed.

Notebook PCs require specially designed Pentium MMX processors due
to heat and power issues. The top speed for MMX notebooks today is
166 MHz; a 200-MHz version won't arrive before fall at the earliest,
sources say. It's unlikely you'll see a notebook with a Pentium MMX-233
chip before late in 1997.
