Withdrawing the idea is a very drastic step, something that Mr. "Destroy all Pentium III CPUs" from the privacy advocacy groups doesn't have to worry about. Some people were rather surprised how quickly Intel changed the ID default from on to off. Removing the feature entirely not only requires a permanent change inside the CPU, but also makes useless the software that was going to support this feature.
