The competition for control of Internet portal sites is
intensifying, as negotiations and agreements among top search engine and
portal companies continue. Consolidation of these sites will persist until
the most efficient collaborations possible are achieved. The portals may
then start to break a part a bit, as consumers get tired of sparse
selection of portal sites. In the meantime, however, the newest major
acquisition may well lead to the next most popular portal site after AOL
and Yahoo!. In addition, the acquisition furthers AT&T's plans to become a
premier provider of Internet access, as AT&T is now completing the
acquisition of At Home's major shareholder, TeleCommunications, Inc.
Involvement in the At Home Network will help AT&T to offer a variety of
Internet services including dial-up access via its AT&T Worldnet service.
