Glenn,

Barnes and Noble is not charging sales tax except in New York state and one other. The states are not going to stand still for so much commerce being done and leaving them out of the equation.

How can they do that (not charge sales tax)? I thought the law was that if they had operations in Ca and I order a book from B&N online, I have to pay tax. Dell got a lot of initial customers this way (giving Ca and NY residents a chance to pay no tax) - of course these were big ticket items.

I know this is a short term phenomenon, the states will want their share soon. Trying to automate state/regional sales tax is a real mess for everybody (most companies now ask YOU to calculate your own tax)
