Here's how

"Isn't there a basic problem though, with your hopes for Digital Me in that Novell probably knows very little about retail/consumer marketing."

Yes all very true. But that is not what selling Digital Me to the internet is all about. We are talking here about Ecommerce and selling a solution that facilitates ecommerce --- a solution which involves Novell plumbing.

Novell is going to sell a lot of plumbing to vendors who want to have an ecommerce platform that works. How? By providing vendors with access to the vault in which digital identities are stored without disclosing the information that makes the identity secure. Vendors are the first customers. They will fall over themselves knowing that they don't have to run security checks and maintain vast databases on their customers in order to sell toasters and get paid.

Think of it as Novell selling the little machine that the supermarket uses to swipe your credit card through for transactions--- but in this case an internet version.

Secondly if Novell manages the vault transaction itself or through a partnership with other companies it obtains the back end service revenue. Call it a Novell directory in every ecommerce transaction.

At the front end it simplifies the whole ecommerce process by eliminating vendor responsibility for the customer verification process. At the back end it simplifies the billing/payment for the transaction by working with AMEX etc. (Incidentally once a major shareholder!) Just imagine how this system will cut down on fraudulent credit card purchases.

What about retail customers? Well just give me that secure identity and take the risk out of buying products on the internet and watch what the consumer does.
