Didn't the 21164 have problems with yield as well, even though it had a very clean architecture and orthogonal instruction set? I don't think it mattered for Alpha, however, since Alpha is targeted towards a much smaller volume than K7.

Concerning the large die size on the K7, this is exactly why I call it the "Ford Mustang" approach to CPU architecture. I don't know if I'd call it "inexcusable," since advances in process technology are quickly allowing for larger and larger transistor budgets. But it's interesting that you are also comparing the K7 to a "graduate school research project."
