Gas explosion in Taylor, in northern B.C.
WebPosted Wed Jan 27 17:05:12 1999
TAYLOR, BRITISH COLUMBIA - More than 1,000 people have been forced from their homes and businesses after two explosions at a gas plant in this community.

Police say some people were injured in the methane blast at the Solex Gas Liquids plant. No fatalities have been confirmed.

The evacuations began about 1 pm local time. A school was the first to be evacuated. Police are now trying to account for all the residents and see that the students meet up with their families.

Solex employees in Calgary say the plant is secure and there is no continuing leak. All roads into the community have been closed and there is a cloud of smoke hanging over the town.

There are reports some of the victims have suffered burns. The injured are being transported to hospital in Fort St. John. Other residents are being taken to the nearby town of Baldonnal.

Taylor is in northeastern British Columbia, near the border with Alberta.
