SR,

Gottfried is the retired IBM DASD engineer ;-))

But if the DIE-FuD problem is head crashes, that is the sort of thing that causes you to have to retest from ground zero ie once they redesign/modify the head or actuator, they have to re-do functional, reliability, environmental, accelerated end-of-life and other tests before they can re-release it to the public. Depending on how they built this two-headed puppy, they might have to re-test the 'half' of the drive that wasn't 'broken' also.

Now, some companies might only do part of the work and then let the consumer be the 'testers'. But I think SNE is too class an act to do that. This all means time and money. They have a big chunk of 'face' riding on this, so I don't think they can afford to do this quick and dirty. But they will have to decide if they will re-engineer and re-release or bow out gracefully. They might have to 'adopt' a substitute removable media to fill in the down time and all that Jaz.
