Hurricane provides a new level of performance by moving the LAN Emulation software and Packet burst into hardware. This is a powerful combination that captures the high 155Mbps data rates of ATM without giving the gained performance back through software LAN emulation. Hurricane is the first to put LAN emulation in HARDWARE. Hurricane takes advantage of the performance gains possible with bigger packets by implement a packet burst system that sends 16K bytes at a time. The overhead reduction this provides combined with the 155Mbps transfer rate makes Hurricane the fastest LAN hardware available reaching a speed of 12 Megabytes/second. The race is on to increase bandwidth in Local Area Networks. The solutions to date help, but their designs can't reach the speeds today's computers can provide. Today's Servers can move 20 Megabytes/second, leaving 16MB/sec of expensive computer power unused. Even though standard small packet switched ATM sounds fast "155Mbps" LAN Emulation software and short 53 byte packets slow it down and put it in the same or an even lower performance range as "FAST" Ethernet. The very expensive FDDI hardware still does better in this performance race reaching 8 Megabytes/second. FDDI wins because the efficiency of its bigger 4K bytes on a LAN.
