The Problem and the Solution.

>I'm not impressed with [the HAL ad] myself. It's nothing fancy. It's not the way I would have addressed the Y2k issue, and so I think the new iMac ad (which is GREAT) would have been more productive.<

I think you severely underestimate the immediate -- and residual -- public reaction to this ad. I believe my reaction (fear) will be more prevalent than yours (ennui).

I have read a number of articles on the Y2K issue as it relates to investments. While my best wisdom is that it will not have *long term* impact on developed countries, it will have an impact on emerging nations with whose already fragile economies preempt the allocation of resources needed to update older computer systems.

Even a short-term setback to these countries economies will be enough to roil overvalued bourses here and in Europe. If those markets reaction to the *threat* of a relatively insignificant Russian default is any guideline, then we are in for some rough sailing.

The threat of even a partial global computer shutdown is keeping corporate leaders, legal counsel, financial advisors and investors awake at night. In this context, the omnipresent/omniscient/omnipotent HAL's past tense use of the phrase "a global economic disruption" is indeed chilling.

As we approach the millennium, people will increasingly trying to gauge their exposure and liability. In such an environment, you will either be judged to be part of the problem ... or part of the solution.

In 60 seconds, AAPL succinctly (but with masking humor) stakes its claim to the latter.
