Any comments on what the best "strategy" for dividend investing might be?

This may not be the best place to ask, but in my case I've got a modest amount to invest, and started a Roth IRA last year.

I think I'd really like to invest a decent portion of what I have in something that pays dividends while possible putting some in "pure growth" issues. Is there any general consensus as to whether it may be best to put dividend paying investments in an IRA to avoid paying taxes on the dividends, or whether it's better to put growth stocks/funds in to avoid the (potentially larger) capital gains taxes?

Thanks.
