Lernout & Hauspie Maintains Close Cooperation With Microsoft

Dow Jones Newswires

BRUSSELS -- Belgian software company Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products NV (LHSPF) will maintain close cooperation with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) over the coming years, the company's Chief Executive Gaston Bastiaens said Thursday.

"Our cooperation with Microsoft is very strong. We are both on track and in advance of our original schedule," Bastiaens said. "At the Microsoft Office 2000 launch campaign we will market Office and VoiceXpress together."

Bastiaens added that "a big part of the revenues comes from Microsoft."

The chief executive noted that the overall reorganization of Lernout and Hauspie's divisions and related companies will be ready by March or April.

Lernout & Hauspie said late Wednesday it plans to reorganize into three divisions from four. The new divisions will include Speech and Language Technologies and Solutions, Speech and Language Applications, and Speech and Language Services.

The company said it would take a minority interest in and integrate into its corporate structure Lernout & Hauspie Investment Co., or LHIC, which was created earlier this month by Lernout & Hauspie founders.

Pol Hauspie, co-founder and co-chairman of L&H Speech Products, said that L&H will have a minority stake in LHIC up to 20%, and that key investors will have the rest.

Analysts recently have expressed concern about the ties between Lernout & Hauspie and two venture-capital funds linked to its founders - LHIC and Flanders Language Valley Fund (B.FLV).

Hauspie confirmed there's no financial relation or cash flow between the FLV Fund and L&H Holdings or L&H Speech products.
