*OT-Greenspan talk* Lee- I usually love Greenspan..but I am struggling to understand why raising our taxes and investing (more) in treasuries is a better idea than putting funds in the (overall) stock market.....Even a lower-than-the-mean average for stocks over the next few decades would be better than the mean yield on Treasuries......

I would gladly take the tradeoff of putting (some) SSI funds vs. cutting back on SSI benefits for high-income Americans (if necessary)...The increase (in portfolio value) for most (wealthy) Americans should more-than-make up for any loss of benefits....

His assertion that the process could not be free of political interference is ironic given his (supposed) politically-free appointment/decisionmaking...Does he think he is a one-off, or is he admitting that his decisions are not devoid of political influence? (of course, I am sure it is the former..but, nonetheless, it is ironic)....Currently, the SSI surplus is included in (overall tax revenues) for Federal gvt. operating expenses....THE PROCESS IS ALREADY POLITICIZED! (Clinton adm. claiming a budget surplus due to SSI funds...)

(Don't want to get in trouble here, but)..I AM glad that he is supportive of keeping the current surplus (in lieu of tax cuts)...SSI is really an unfunded liability...we (as a country) do not run a surplus...we need to fund this liability; It is unethical, IMO, to run this unfunded liability.....I am mad that we have passed this (problem) on from one generation to the next..... Therefore, we should not return the money at this time.....
