NEC Has No Comment On Intel Investment Report 01/25/99

TOKYO, JAPAN, 1999 JAN 25 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. NEC
Corp. [TOKYO:6701] says it has no comment on Japanese press reports
that it is in talks with Intel Corp. [NASDAQ:INTC] over a possible
investment by the American semiconductor maker.

The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported in its Monday morning edition that
Intel is in talks regarding an investment in NEC's memory production
facilities or the company itself. Last week, Intel announced plans
to invest $100 million in Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Newsbytes,
January 21, 1999). The money will be used for investment in
fabrication, assembly and testing facilities for Rambus DRAM (dynamic
random access memory) chips.

The chips are based on proprietary technology by Rambus Inc.
[NASDAQ:RMBS] and are the standard favored by Intel for next-
generation DRAM chips. At present only a handful of semiconductors
have announced plans to produce Rambus DRAMs and Intel needs to ensure
stable, long-term production for the system to become successful.

NEC has plans to begin production of 72 megabit Rambus DRAM chips
in the first half of this year, with production scheduled to hit 1
million chips per month by the summer. By the end of 1999, NEC expects
to be producing between 3- and 5 million chips per month consisting
of both 72- and 144 megabit varieties.
