Alexa--

I don't really like raw hot dogs, and anyhow I think they're to some extent pre-cooked when they're put together. But Italians do cut 'em up uncooked and put 'em in salads. Disgusting, in my view.

God. I knew kids were starting to obsess about weight younger and younger, but second grade? You're right to make it clear to her that if she eats sensibly she's unlikely to have a problem.

But what deadly germs lurk in the normal kitchen? (I don't speak for my own, though things have improved since I've had Perfect Eric. My refrigerator, though, harbors some pretty interesting stuff. Every once in awhile I throw some of it out: medical sciences's loss.) After all, bacteria of all kinds is everywhere; not all is harmful, and we develop a resistance to most of it anyway.

I agree with you about junk snack food. My mother didn't keep it around, and let me have it only on special occasions. I don't recall objecting to this particularly--I was allowed a couple of cookies after school--and I think it helped me not develop the habit of eating between meals.

Don't get me wrong--I wouldn't call my diet healthy, exactly--but there are at least a few categories of not-especially-good-for-you stuff that don't interest me.
