Sterling Commerce Announces Agreement with Retail Giant Fred Meyer Stores, Inc.</> Major Food and Drug Retailer Will Use Enterprise-Wide Value-Added EC Services, Y2K Assistance, Trading Community Support COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Commerce (NYSE: SE - news) today announced an agreement to provide business-to-business electronic commerce services to Portland-based Fred Meyer Stores, Inc. (NYSE: FMY - news), the nation's fifth largest food and drug retailer.
Under the one-year agreement, Fred Meyer will use Sterling Commerce's secure, value-added EC processing service to exchange business-critical purchasing, invoicing, and shipment status information with more than 2,000 suppliers. Major Fred Meyer business entities include Fred Meyer Stores, Ralph's Supermarkets, Food 4 Less Warehouse Stores, Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Quality Food Centers, Fred Meyer Jewelers, Barclay's Jewelers, Fox's Jewelers, Littman Jewelers, and Merksamer Jewelers.
In addition to value-added EC processing, Fred Meyer Stores, Inc. will also utilize Sterling's COMMERCE Y2K service on an enterprise-wide basis with its suppliers. COMMERCE Y2K is a comprehensive Year 2000 readiness testing and verification service for electronic data interchange (EDI)-based commerce communities, and is designed to assist companies in meeting EC-related Year 2000 goals and standards.
To enhance the return on investment in electronic commerce both for Fred Meyer companies and their suppliers, Sterling Commerce will also provide community management and implementation services. Sterling's expert EC services staff will help Fred Meyer companies expand the range of EC transactions with existing suppliers, as well as increase the number of companies doing business electronically with Fred Meyer.
