Yes Del,an act of mercy, they were saved alive. They were not to be killed because the female children were no threat to the people of God. I would help you understand the dynamics at work here,(they are without question), but I fear that my time would be wasted on someone who is biblically illiterate, and who has no desire to understand!. And the pearls of God are too precious to cast about without measure!
I will say this though. You have not read in this passage that my Lord told them it was ok to have sex with these females saved! Nor did Moses!
To the contrary indeed. My LORD does give explicit commands as to what should be done with female captives, and slaves!

And then the 1,000 yr. reign of Christ! And as it was in the war against the midianites all that may withstand the fire will be cleansed!
