I never subscribed to the thesis that "vox populi, vox dei", so I don't much care about uninformed public opinion, which is notoriously fickle, except as a practical matter. As for the article, I am a subscriber to the New Republic, and was so when Andrew Sullivan was there, and I like him pretty well, and his reporting is solid enough, but I think his take is wrong, of course. I do think that guys like Judge Bork are to harsh about American culture, and too pessimistic, but I think that Bill Kristol has it just about right. Sullivan tends to smoosh them all together. Guys like Kristol are more moderate in temperament, and not particularly scolding in style. By the way, in the early '80's, neoconservatives were merely neo- liberals with the courage of their convictions. |
