"what's the advantage of doing this (calls) instead of just selling the stock?"

I just sold DELL calls. I was going to sell the stock today at 92.5, but I cancelled the order, wrote calls, and collected $6-7 instead.

Why? If the stock goes on Feb 19, I'll have received $96. If it doesn't, I can sell for anything above $86 and have the same result as selling today. If the price runs way, way, up, I'll not participate, but I wouldn't anyway if I sold today.

The bottom line is that I need to raise cash. The selling does NOT indicate a loss of faith in DELL or DELL's future. It's just that with this strategy, I get a little cash TODAY. Hope this helps. PW.

P.S. I'm only selling 1/10 of my DELL position.
