These anecdotes are slightly askew from the usual subject matter. But they aren't exactly off topic, either.

Those readers of this thread who are Rush Limbaugh fans may already have heard this story. We are not, but couple of days ago my husband heard, on the car radio, Limbaugh read a press account of an event that had recently occurred in a municipal government office in Illinois, he thinks it was. It seems that an employee of this agency, in referring to a fund over which he had control, described himself as being "niggardly" in recent disbursements. (He was expressing pride over his conservative administration of the fund.)

He was misunderstood. The word "niggardly" was objected to as being racist. He explained the meaning of the term, but to no avail. The mayor felt it best that in light of the public reaction, he hand in his resignation. He did so. End of story.

This amazing story reminded us of one we were told by a group of college teachers and students a few years ago. In the school paper, the expression "a chink in his armor" had been used. It had elicited indignant objections to the anti-Asian racism of the writer of the piece. When the writer replied by publishing Webster's definition of the offending word, that elicited further outrage at the writer's "arrogance."

I guess my point in telling these discouraging stories is...

I don't know...

to ventilate?

Probably I should have posted this on the Feelings thread, where the subject of the implosion of the American educational process has been under discussion. Maybe I will.

I'm depressed.
