Intel Corp to unveil PC "video voicemail"

HILLSBORO, Oregon (Reuter) - Intel Corp. said it will unveil on Monday an upgrade kit for its business video conferencing system which enables customers to send and receive video voicemail messages for the first time.

Intel managers said in interviews before the launch that they expect the kit to be particularly useful for people in different time zones, who will now be able to leave "videomail" messages for one another during their regular working hours.

The Intel ProShare Conferencing Plus Package also makes it possible to record and replay audio and video portions of video conferences and discussions, using the kit's support for full-screen display on Microsoft Corp Windows 95.

Sheryl Currid, president of Houston-based Currid & Co. which conducts high tech research for the workplace, estimates that about half a million people around the world now use video conferencing capabilities.

As with many technologies, she said the applications will initially be in business, but expand later to homes via telecommuters and people who conduct business out of their homes.

"I think it opens up a whole new dimension," she said. "I would allow for some very interesting changes in business and I can definitely see work internationally, for time-shifting messages."

Applications may include banking discussions, or problem- solving in issues ranging from oil production to medical X-ray diagnostics and automotive accident claims.

"Half of this new technology is giving people this new idea," and allowing them to put it to use in new applications its inventors may not even have envisioned, she said.

Intel said the package works with its ProShare Conferencing Video System 200, which costs more than $1,000 and includes a video camera and other gear to enable video conferencing using personal computers.

The kit will be available free to buyers of the Intel ProShare Conferencing Video System 200 on or after Jan. 15. The kit will be shipped in the United States as of Feb. 5 and worldwide as of Feb. 15.

The package is available as an upgrade to existing Intel ProShare users for $179 with an optional professional headset, or for $129 for the software upgrade only, Intel said.

The video answering machine capability requires about one to two megabytes of hard disk storage space per minute of video message, the company said.

The Intel ProShare systems provide audio, video and data conferencing over Integrated Digital Services Network telephone lines and corporate networks running on Microsoft's Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 operating systems.
