I think that could be a distinct possibility. I have read of a company that has made a digital VCR that stored the taped show on a hard disk and even allowed for watching of the recorded program from the beginning even while the later portion of the program was still being recorded. This was accomplished through buffering. The problem was there was no portability that a tape could offer. How about becoming a Blockbuster or the like on the Web. Large data storage machines at ISP to store movies, music, programs, to be rented; broadband delivery; to device in home capable of storing data and some fancy software that would "return" movie or whatnot by automatically deleteing data. No lines, no out of stock, no late charges!
I do apologize for not having name of company who made that VCR. Please take this with a grain of salt I do not make any claim to know any inside information.
