The drive to migration to CDMA [in whatever it's incarnation] is higher data speeds.

The highest GSM will get to is with EDGE, in late 2000, at 384kbps. That meets the requirements for the lower limit for Third Generation wireless. CDMA-2000, or W-CDMA, or some other version of CDMA will pull it up to 2Mbps. The speed [and therefore technology] will be selected by the mobile depending on environment and application.

iDen has a constraint.

There is no way in h*ll you can get anything anywhere close to 384kbps on a 25khz channel. I believe that it is likely that Nextel will use some of their spectrum for CDMA [Motorola makes 800Mhz CDMA product]to satisfy the higher data rate requirements -- not to be "technology" compatible, but to be "service" compatible

When IMT-2000 [third generation wireless] is a common item remains to be seen. I suspect serious deployment won't be until 2003 - 2005.

Between now and then the Nextel/Motorola product development team will be very busy.

My opinions only....
