My uncle has the same kind of story about himself. He went to college and my grandmother opened a checking account for him and funded it with a modest amount each month. Only thing was, my uncle always figured that he had money as long as he had checks left in the checkbook.

Luckily for him, he (and I for that matter) grew up in a small town like yours, where the bankers were friendly and trusted you to take care of things.
