If you have a large enough account, Schwab is affordable unless you're buying very small lots ($29.95 per web trade) and they have EXCELLENT free research capabilities for their higher bracket investors. I've never had a problem getting trades through on the web site, but there are also phone brokers if the system were to go down or slow down. I'm willing to pay the extra few bucks for the service and research.
