I would say that logic is a systematic form of analysis. The purpose of logic is to allow the testing of declarative statements to see whether they are consistent, according to a formal structure. Thus, one may input nonsensical declarative statements, and determine that they are, in fact, logical.
"All men are dogs."
"Socrates is a man."
"Therefore, Socrates is a dog."
The above syllogism is perfectly logical, but factually inaccurate.
There is also the use of logic to analyze argumentation, which is a particular type of discourse. Certain types of arguments are considered illogical, not because they are ineffective, but because they are simply "bad form." Thus, Johnnie Cochran's argument, "If the glove don't fit, you must acquit," which was extremely effective, is considered to be illogical.
I observe that many people use the term "logical" when what they actually mean is "rational," or "cogent," or "well-reasoned." |
