I do not approve of the Guatemalan regime, and am in that wing of the conservative movement which would intervene more often around the world to promote democracy. However, the Sandinistas, by their alliances and anti- Americanism, offered an actual strategic threat, which the Guatemalan regime does not. They were sponsoring the conflicts which afflicted Central America, as a proxy for Cuba; giving the Soviet Union an additional asset in the Americas; and oppressing their own people. Don't cry for them, Mr. Schuh. As for how many died--- the region has been comparatively more stable since their elimination, so perhaps we have saved some lives....
