Char,

This refractory ore is iron pyrite. The iron pyrite contains the gold. Leach solutions are not effective on sulfides. The pretreatment is to put the ore in an autoclave and heat to a point where the sulfur is driven off. Then the ore can be leached conventionally. However, a fire assay works on these refractory ores because the heating in the assay also drives off the sulfur.
