Cable modem and phone line ADSL start the same, basically 640K. Faster speeds can be purchased but at greater cost. In general, only the TELECOM's seem to be offering ADSL at faster rates then 640K en mass but it costs a lot more as well.

"This DSL feature will provide AOL members with high-speed bandwidth to their personal computers over existing telephone wires. At a typical speed of up to 640 kilobits per second, DSL access will be more than 20 times faster than the standard 28.8 kbps modems."

A few other good things about ADSL through a phone company.
One line can handle internet, fax, and phone call simultaneously. You don't need a second or third line. With a cable modem you generally do. Also, depending on your cable company some bring 640K to the home but you still need to have a phone line to send data back to them through your modem
