What you may be overlooking is that there are signal integrity issues that constrain both the speed and number of agents that shared bus architectures can support. Basically, its a transmission line problem. The more loads you have hanging off a wire, the harder it is to match impedances and thus the harder it is to keep a clean fast signal at higher clock speeds. In a point-to-point scheme, the signal integrity issues become much easier to deal with and so higher clock speeds become more attainable.
