Caller-ID and PC ID After thinking about Gary Ng's question for a while, I do see some similarities between Caller-ID and the PC ID issues. As I recall, it took years for the phone industry to get FCC approval and then State approval to implement Caller-ID. Some states passed it well before others. The main concern was the privacy of the individual. We ended up with a system that allows the individual to choose caller-ID if he desires, (but not imbedded in the phone), and those that choose it can turn it on or off. (I'm a great believer in caller-ID. I use it to help screen calls. Ever notice the tele- marketers disable sending of the ID? If I get the message, "no information sent", I don't answer). There are a lot of good reasons to force everyone to use caller-ID. For example, it would cut down on phone harassment. Probably on phone sex also. But this would come at the expense of legitimate reasons for personal privacy. Since the caller ID feature is not embedded in the phone, there is no way for anyone to force you to turn it on. And I don't think the government will ever allow this feature to be embedded. So for the consumer and the privacy groups, I think the key question is, can the embedded PC-ID ever be used to identify the user? If it can, I think there's a real issue.
