Nothing earth-shattering in Advanced Fibre Communications' (AFCI) Jan. 26 earnings report, but when you're a company still recovering from a near-death experience, dull is good. Fourth-quarter sales were below the same period a year earlier, but they climbed 12% from the third quarter -- the first meaningful sequential increase since the fourth quarter of 1997. At 8 cents a share, earnings beat analyst estimates by 3 cents. I think Advanced Fibre Communications continues to make a comeback (although I'd sure like the company to find a great, permanent CEO). I'm upping my October 1999 price target on the stock to $18 a share from the current $15 target.
