Well O'49 er - it depends how you define those grasshoppers of yours? I guess under the American Dream they should all be able to stretch their legs, shake themselves a little and become ants? I think there are millions who are born into unfortunate circumstance where the battle for self improvement is seldom won. So easy to say 'everything is possible in America', and leave compassion to others.

I remember reading about an Irish writer - I think it was Frank Connor - who was born into abject poverty in Dublin. He was one in a million - and it's important to repeat that statistic.

Your fable is flawed because grasshoppers can't help being grasshoppers - so if they get some leverage in this battle of survival - the more power to them! dd
