In my haste to reply I made a few errors which I will attempt to correct here.

Chlorine has one more electron than it does protons and thus has a negative charge. Sodium has one more proton than it does electrons and there for has a positive charge. When the two comine to form salt, both of the atoms take on the configuration of a noble gas.

There is a small amount of HCl in stomach acids but the stomach has a special lining to prevent the acid from destroying the stomach. The lungs have no such lining. Very little Cl will reamain as Cl when in a water solution. It becomes HCl. I would not advise that you try drinking HCl or inhaling chlorine gas.
