Let me articulate my position, and let's see who agrees. Civility requires the presumption that your opponent is arguing in good faith, is fairly intelligent, and is worth debating, because one might sharpen one's views in the process. True, such a presumption may be strained, but one nevertheless tries to avoid knee- jerk responses and snide sarcasm, even more so direct insult. Restraint is the hallmark of civilization. I don't know who started things, and there are those who seem to me to offend rarely, such as Tiger's Paw, but the last couple of days have seen such an easy lapse into invective that it is worth trying to get everyone to take a breath.
