martin,

Comparing an antibiotic used as a feed additive to Viagra I am afraid is like comparing apples to oranges.

Pfizer was not suing over the actual decision on Virginamycin but the manner in which the decision was made. If Pfizer were to allow the ban to be made without fair scientific scrutiny then it would set a president for the EU to in the future pull the rug under Pfizer's feet at their own whim.

The Europeans have always been against antibiotics as feed additives and I believe it is this philosophy and not specific science against the antibiotic that Pfizer will have to fight.

That whole issue is totally another large can of worms. The United States by far the largest abuser of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the world. Many bacteriologists have long been arguing to stop this indiscriminate use as we now have seen so many new strains of super resistant bacteria that seem to be resistant to just about any antibiotic available.
