Gamer...You have zeroed in on target at last. A few months ago you were ogling a rise in cruse price which did not materialize. I am leaning towards your explanation. A friend gave me some leftover books a few weeks ago that detail studies undertaken at Harvard and similar type institutions. These studies are dating back to the early 1950s. Bottom line:

Government is in place now to benefit the multinationals. Period. These aren't cranks making these claims, but PhDs at major think tanks and universities paid by Big Oil, et. al. to develop strategies for further economic domination...and once these strategies are theorized, then these same PhDs are teaching same to students that go to work for Big Oil, et. al.

World Peace? Gimme a break! That's a fool's dream. That is not the program out of Washington, no matter what the spinmeisters are saying... Why Desert Storm intervention for Kuwait and then we stand by with our hands folded while over a million are slaughtered in Rwanda?

Greenspan himself has written extensively on the subject of fiat currencies, boom & bust, etc. as a means for the truly wealthy to amass even greater fortunes. It's not a secret. It's just that most folks either don't care or are too busy trying to figure out where to get some coin to buy groceries, pay the rent and fill the tank rather than worry about the big picture.
