Pezz-I have made five trips to New Zealand, spending a total of nine months there.
I fished most every day weather permitting. I also have fished Tasmania and Alaska for trout. I would say Alaska is a better trout fishery than New Zealand overall at least for rainbows. The salmon fishing there is much better than New Zealand. Tasmania is very good too though I prefer New Zealand over Tasmania.
I have also fished a lot of the states though no where in the East for trout. I have fished California, Idaho, Colorado, South Dakota, and the White River in Arkansas. I went to college at Humboldt in N. California and fished a lot up there. I also fish the Sierra every year on a back packing trip or two.
I have salt water fly fished in Belize (bonefish and cudas mostly), Christmas Island (bonefish) and Florida for tarpon. Tarpon are the toughest fish I have ever taken on, both for getting to bite and fighting.
I too practice catch and release.
Regarding the question about the bamboo rod. Some of the custom rods by such makers as Gilliam, Dickerson, or Payne are commanding prices over $10,000. I unfortunately don't recognize the letters MONT as related to a custom maker. It is more likely a production rod. These rods were produced by Granger, South Bend, Arrow, Herters and so on. They are not nearly as in demand and depending on condition would likely be worth around $200 to $600.
