Tony:
I am bullish on Hilton although I got in at the mid 20's. HLT has been buyng up quality properties; eg The Sheraton Torrey Pines. Last year it was rumored that Ladbroke's (who owns Hilton hotels in Europe and parts of Asia) wanted to acquire the HLT hotels and that Bollenbach rejected the offer. Since then the PPE spinoff has been completed and the pending recession everyone expected has not occurred. So a buyout is more possible now. And earnings should be ok. I haven't been buying anymore common but I have been buying the 5% convertible due in 06. Its selling around 95 which means you get a yield of about 6% on a triple BBB credit.Bollenbach said he would keep it investment grade. Tne conversion price is $22+. If Ladbroke tries again my sense is the offer wouldbe well above $22 , maybe $30. Last year HLT was low $30's with PPE and Steve supposedly said no.With earnings do out 2/4 we should start to get a good idea of what may happen. 99 should also be a great year as every parties in 2000 at classy hotels and casinos. Purely my opinion.
PPE seems to be attractively priced but as JD says HET seems really cheap. I like them better.
In Barron's this weekend one of the roundtable participants suggests shorting STD due to their Latin America exposure and lack of adequate provisions.
