Well, in terms of the "best" tools that's a very difficult question but suffice to say that I would not use anything from Borland. They have so many bugs and such poor support and poor collateral material that they aren't worth the time or the effort. They will take issue with me on that, but fortunately I am not interested in winning that argument: I simply don't buy their products anymore.

I used JBuilder 2.0 and I can tell you it was a cruel joke. After calling support I discovered they wanted me to detail precisely when and how JBuilder crashed despite the fact that it crashed just about everywhere just about every 5 or 10 minutes on several machines running NT and '95 with TONS of memory and very fast CPUs. Well, I wasn't about to alpha test their product for them, I am certain that my client wasn't paying me for that.

What's irritating is that they still don't realize how fundamentally flawed their development process is or just how bad the quality is. It's systemic, from documentation to support to product implementation and even their advertising -- have you seen the add with the Peewee Herman looking guy in an auditorium with a spotlight shinning on his bald head? I thought it was an anti-drug add showing what happens to crack addicts but it turned out to be a C++Builder advertisement showing how you, too, can stand out from the crowd.

Inprise prefers to stick its head in the sand and they still actually believe they have better technology. That was probably true for about two weeks back in 1989 when the best of worst tools available at the time. It's been all down hill since. They brought in Del to cut costs, then start the process of learning about software. He hasn't learned very fast, some day he'll know enough to make the distinction between garbage and quality and do something about it.
