. More than half of the traffic to this site occurs during work hours, and yet of the 100,000 user sessions, less than 4% were using Windows NT as the PC platform. Nearly 60% of the total used Win 95, 20% Win 98, with rest divided between Mac, OS2, Linux, etc.
There is no question that the growth will come from Xeon in the near future (i.e server rather than workstation), but my point is that the more "onerous" the NT 5.0 (Windows 2000) requirements, the more likely that Symbios has an opportunity to have its more sophisticated technology prevail as opposed to Adaptec's. I am just saying that whatever bright line currently prevails, may no longer prevail with NT 5.0. This gets into the old debate of taking low margin business as opposed to only high margin, but LSI has a history of working closely with INTC, and with its broader product line, LSI would not necessarily be that dependent upon INTC for its business.
As I look at the above usage statistics, I am wondering if part of that "etc." doesn't also include Windows 3.1, which I know is still widely used by many small businesses. I don't remember the exact figure, but I saw a statistic about six months ago that showed that the % of American businesses still using 3.1 was surprisingly high.
Or does 3.1 not have the capability of having direct Internet access. Surely AOL (and others) had business before '95 came along. |
