max - Just to clarify - "My original modem was a PCI device, which apparently is less efficient than an ISA one. " Actually, all things being equal, PCI bus devices would be the more efficient. What matters here is the configuration of the modem itdelf. It sounds from your description that you were using a "Winmodem" which is, as you suggest, more reliant on software rather than hardware based operations. The US Robotics FAxModem on the other hand, is also a PCI device, but does not suffer from the same limitations as its sibling the "WinModem". Unfortunately, the packaging of these modems doesn't make this very clear, other than the fact that the "WinModem" comes at a cheaper price.
