Believe it or not, but this is one forecast for the world economy in 1999: An end to deflation; economic recovery in Japan; a sharp increase in commodity prices, including gold and oil (up to $16 or more by the end of the year); and low inflation in general.

The man making these predictions was Kenneth Courtis, chief strategist for Deutsche Bank and a prescient commentator on economic trends--a few months ago he forecast that the yen would rise from 145 against the dollar to near 100 by the end of 1998.

That optimistic outlook was in sharp contrast to a gloomy outlook presented by Martin Wolf of the Financial Times...
